Invasive Pneumococcal Disease Reports

Thursday 17th May 2012

These reports include information on the epidemiology of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in New Zealand, and the serotypes and antimicrobial susceptibility of invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates. The 2008 reports use information available from ESR’s national laboratory-
based surveillance of IPD. This surveillance is based on diagnostic laboratories referring all invasive isolates of S. pneumoniae to ESR for serotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

As IPD became a notifiable disease on 17 October 2008, reports for 2009 onwards will be based on information from both IPD notifications and the laboratory-based surveillance.

Reports on the antimicrobial susceptibility of invasive S. pneumoniae isolates have been published annually since 2002 here. From 2008, antimicrobial susceptibility data will be included in the Invasive Pneumococcal Disease Annual Reports and not published separately.
