Summary

The number of isolates
(n=112) showed a slight increase in comparison with December 2007 (n = 102).
Due to the ongoing outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 42, this
phage type represented 24% of the total isolates. The number of S.
Typhimurium phage type 160 (15) remained similar to the number of isolates in
December 2007 (12). Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month
included S. Haifa (7 human isolates since 2002) and Zanzibar (10 human isolates since 2002). Salmonella Onderspoort was isolated from a
human specimen for the first time in New Zealand; it had been previously
isolated from reptiles in 2005 and 2007.
