Human Salmonella Isolates, 2009 No. 7, July

Summary

The number of isolates (n = 70) received this month was slightly higher than the numbers received in July 2008 (n = 65). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type RDNC-Aug 08 was the predominant serotype due to an outbreak in the region of Hawkes Bay. The first isolate of this phage type was from a sick cow in the Waikato region in August 2008 and in December 2008 the first human case was reported in the region of Tauranga. Since December 2008, cases have been reported in Auckland (6), Hawkes Bay (14), Rotorua (2), Wellington (1), Taupo (1), Tauranga (3), and Waikato (23). Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month included S. Arechavaleta (2 human isolates since 2002), S. Orion (2 human isolates since 2002) and S. Typhimurium phage type 199 (4 human isolates since 2002).
