Summary

The number of isolates (n = 78)
received this month showed a decrease in comparison to the numbers received in
August 2008 (n = 88). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 160 accounted
for 10% of total serotypes in contrast to 17% in August 2008. Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month
included S. Papuana (5 human isolates since 2002) and S.
Taksony (2 human isolates since 2002). Salmonella subspecies
I 4,5,12:i:- and Salmonella subspecies I 4,12:i:- were isolated for the
first time in New Zealand from people who had recent overseas travel history.
These serotypes have shown a dramatic increase in Europe
over the last two years.
