Human Salmonella Isolates, 2009 No. 10, October

Summary

The number of isolates (n = 84) received this month showed a decrease in comparison to the numbers received in October 2008 (n = 106). Human isolates of S. Brandenburg from the endemic area of the South Island peaked in October this year in contrast to September in 2008. S. Brandenburg accounted for 15% of total serotypes this month in contrast to 7% in October 2008. Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month included S. Emek (5 human isolates since 2002), S. Haifa (7 human isolates since 2002) and S. Victoria (8 human isolates since 2002). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 107 was isolated for the first time in New Zealand.
