Summary

The number of isolates (n=122) showed a decrease in comparison with January 2009 (n = 173). An increase in Salmonella Infantis was reported in December. PFGE analysis was performed on all S. Infantis isolates confirmed by ERL since November 1st 2009. Results indicated that 18 of these isolates had an indistinguishable PFGE profile, of which 15 were from the South Island. Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 101 (11 in 2010, 5 in 2009) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month included S. Itami (4 human isolates since 2002; all 4 identiifed in 2009) and S. Typhimurium phage type 197 (2 human isolates since 2002; both isolates identified in 2005). Salmonella Typhi phage type E1b was isolated for the first time in New Zealand.
