Human Salmonella Isolates, 2010 No. 4, April

Summary

The number of isolates (n=85) showed a decrease in comparison with April 2009 (n = 90). Salmonella Infantis (7 in April 2010, 8 in April 2009) was the predominant serotype this month. Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month included S. Amager (1 human case since 2002 who had recently travelled to South America - No travel history for the 2010 case), S. Emek (7 human isolates since 2002), and S. Zanzibar (6 human isolates since 2002). The first human isolate of S. Enteritidis phage type 15a was isolated this month in the Nelson-Marlborough health district; recent travel to Africa.
