Human Salmonella Isolates, 2010 No. 11, November

Summary

The number of isolates (n=96) showed an increase in comparison with November 2009 (n = 71). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 160 (14 in November 2010, 13 in November 2009) and S. Typhimurium phage type 135 (14 in November 2010, none in November 2009) were the predominant serotypes this month. Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month included S. Enteritidis phage type 15a (first human isolate in April 2010), S. Lichtfield (first human case since 1998; 8 cases were confirmed prior to 1998, 4 of which had recently traveled overseas) and S. Typhimurium phage type 60 (3 human cases since 2002).

Thirteen Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 135 were confirmed in the Otago region, all but one were from children aged 7 years old or younger. The Public Health Unit from Otago has been investigating the cases.
