Human Salmonella Isolates, 2010 No. 12, December

Summary

The number of isolates (n=88) showed an increase in comparison with December 2009 (n = 79). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 160 (16 in December 2010, 8 in December 2009) was the predominant serotype this month. Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month included: S. Augustenborg (4 cases since 2002; all but one case had recently travelled to Thailand), S. Birkenhead (14 cases since 2002, 5 of which had recently travelled to Australia), S. Litchfield (1 case confirmed in November 2010, previous 9 cases were confirmed prior 2000), S. Meleagridis (3 human cases confirmed prior to 2000; has been previously isolated in goats), S. Orion (3 cases since 2002), S. Typhimurium phage type 126 (9 cases since 2002), and S. Typhimurium phage type 197 (3 cases since 2002).
