Summary

The number of isolates (n=131) showed an increase in comparison with January 2010 (n = 122). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 160 (6% in 2010, 12% in 2011) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month included S. Typhimurium phage type 66 (2 human isolates since 2002) and S. Typhimurium phage type 197 (5 human isolates since 2002, 2 with overseas travel). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 99 was confirmed for the first time in the Manuwatu region, the case had recently travelled overseas. Four isolates of this phage type had been previously confirmed in three avian (1992-1997) and one bovine (2005) isolates.
