Human Salmonella Isolates, 2011 No. 2, February

Summary

The number of isolates (n=111) showed a decrease in comparison with February 2010 (n = 129). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 160 (3% in Feb 2010, 9% in Feb 2011) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month included S. Emek (10 human isolates since 2002), S. Enteritidis phage type 13 (22 human isolates since 2002) and S. Typhimurium phage type 99 (First human isolate confirmed in January 2011). Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 53 was confirmed for the first time in the Auckland region.
