Human Salmonella Isolates, 2011 No. 3, March

Summary

The number of isolates (n=154) showed an increase in comparison with March 2010 (n = 121). Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 9a (11.5% in March 2010, 11% in March 2011) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month included S. Typhimurium phage type 126 (12 human isolates since 2002, eight of whom had recently travelled overseas), S. Ruiru (6 human isolates since 2002) and S. Enteritidis phage type 53 (first human isolate confirmed in February 2011). Salmonella Typhi phage type 54 and S. Alachua were confirmed for the first time in New Zealand. A sudden increase of S. Agona was detected in the Auckland region. All cases had attended a same function.
