Summary

The number of isolates (n=87) showed a slight increase in comparison with May 2010 (n = 86). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 101 (9% in May 2010, 8% in May 2011) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month included S. Havana (12 human isolates since 2000) and S. Waycross (4 human isolates since 1998, 2 of which had overseas travel). Salmonella Larochelle (6,7 : e,h : 1,2) was isolated for the first time in New Zealand (no travel history).
