Summary

The number of isolates (n=74) showed a slight increase in comparison with June 2010 (n = 70). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 101 (11% in June 2010 and 2011) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon New Zealand serotypes identified this month included S. Typhimurium phage type 29 (6 human isolates since 2002). Salmonella Apeyeme (8,20 : z38 : -) was isolated for the first time in New Zealand (no travel history). One isolate of Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 104 was confirmed in the Auckland region. This phage type has been associated with multiple antibiotic resistance overseas (no travel history).
