Summary

The number of isolates (n=81) showed a decrease in comparison with November 2010 (n = 96). Salmonella Typhimurium RDNC-May 06 (11.5% in November 2010, 8.6% in November 2011) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included: S. Enteritidis phage type 3a (First New Zealand isolate confirmed in August this year – all cases had recently travelled to Malaysia), S. Lexington var.15+ (16 confirmed since 1992, 44% of which had recently travelled overseas), S. Litchfield (9 human isolates since 1992), S. Typhimurium phage type 120 (associated overseas with multiple antibiotic resistance; 6 human isolates confirmed since 1992), and S. Virginia (2 isolates confirmed in 1992 and one in 1996; the 2011 case had no report of overseas travel while the cases from the 1990s had recently travelled overseas).
