Summary

The number of isolates (n=66) showed a decrease in comparison with December 2010 (n = 88). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 160 (18% in December 2010, 10.5% in December 2011) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included: S. Ruiru (8 human isolates since 2002; this serotype has been isolated from bovine), S. Potsdam (13 confirmed since 2002), and S. Typhimurium phage type 107 (1 human isolates in 2009 and 1 canine isolate in 2010). Salmonella Doorn was isolated for the first time in New Zealand; no recent overseas travelled was reported.
