Human Salmonella Isolates, 2012 No. 1, January

Wednesday 22nd March 2023

Summary

The number of isolates (n=139) showed a slight increase in comparison with January 2011 (n = 131). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 160 (11% in January 2011, 8% in January 2012) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included: S. Emek (12 human isolates since 2002, 6 of which were from the Waikato region; this serotype has been confirmed in bovine), S. Enteritidis phage type 8 (16 human isolates confirmed since 2002), S. Poona (19 human isolates since 2002) and S. Typhimurium phage type 191 (7 human isolates since 2002). Salmonella Kokomlemle was isolated for the first time in New Zealand; no recent overseas travelled was reported.

Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 9a/11: Further typing was performed on isolates previously confirmed as Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 9a. The typing results revealed that isolates previously reported as S.  Enteritidis phage type 9a were in fact phage type 11.

Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 23:  A cluster (4 cases) was detected in the Auckland region. PFGE analysis was performed on human and bovine isolates.  The bovine (Waikato) isolates had 3 distinct PFGE profiles, one of which was indistinguishable from the 4 human cases (Auckland) notified by ERL in January 2012. This profile was also shown to be present in 2009, both in bovine (Waikato) and human isolates (Auckland region).

Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 160: A cluster (4 cases) was detected in the Otago-Southland regions. Cases were aged between 73-84 years old.

Salmonella Saintpaul: A cluster (4 cases) was detected in the Otago region. This serotype is common in the South Island, i.e. between 74-80% of the S. Saintpaul isolates confirmed in the last couple of years were from the South Island.
