Human Salmonella Isolates, 2012 No. 2, February

Wednesday 22nd March 2023

Summary

The number of isolates (n=120) showed a slight increase in comparison with February 2011 (n = 111). Salmonella Infantis (8% in February 2011, 11.5% in February 2012) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included: S. Orion var. 15+ (5 human isolates confirmed since 2002), and S. Typhimurium phage type 136 (1 human isolate since 2000 who was from the Waikato region as well). Salmonella Durban was isolated for the first time in New Zealand; the case had recently travelled to Africa.

Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 9a/11:
Further typing was performed on isolates previously confirmed as Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 9a. The typing results revealed that isolates previously reported as S. Enteritidis phage type 9a were in fact phage type 11.

Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 23:
An additional 7 cases of S. Typhimurium phage type 23 were confirmed this month in the Auckland region. Three of the cases were part of a household cluster.

Salmonella Infantis:
An increase in Salmonella Infantis was noticed in the Wellington-Hutt region where 5 cases were confirmed this month. Only one case was confirmed in the Wellington-Hutt region during the same period last year.
