Summary

The number of isolates (n=71) showed an increase in comparison with July 2011 (n = 57). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type RDNC-May 06 ( 12.3% in July 2011, 8% in July 2012) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included: S. Chailey (2 human isolates in 1992), S. Typhi phage type 28 (1 human isolate confirmed in 1992 and 1 in 2012; both cases had recently travelled to India) and S. Typhimurium phage type 120 (9 human isolates confirmed since 1988; has been associated overseas with multiple antibiotic resistance).
