Human Salmonella Isolates, 2012 No. 8, August

Summary

The number of isolates (n=93) showed an increase in comparison with August 2011 (n = 84). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type RDNC-May 06 ( 10.5% in August 2011, 17% in August 2012) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included: S. Ibadan (common between 1995-2001; only 2 human isolates confirmed since 2007), S. Kedougou (6 human isolates confirmed since 1988), S. Typhimurium phage type 4 (only 2 human isolates since 1988 and both were confirmed in 2004), S. Typhimurium phage type U310 (12 human isolates confirmed since 1988; this serotype was also isolated from bovine in 2008) and S. Wandsworth (3 human isolates confirmed since 1988). First human isolates confirmed this month were S. Enteritidis phage type 1d and S. Typhi phage type 41 (the typhoid case had recently travelled overseas).
