Human Salmonella Isolates, 2013 No. 1, January

Summary

The number of isolates (n=178) showed an increase in comparison with January 2012 (n = 139). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type RDNC-May 06 (5% in January 2012 and 10% in January 2013) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included: S. Enteritidis phage type 7 (2 humans isolates and 7 environmental poultry isolates since 1988), S. Liverpool (2 food isolates and 4 human isolates since 1988), S. Typhimurium phage type 132 (1 feline isolate in 2009), and S.  Galiema (1 human isolate with overseas travel and one bone meal isolate since 1988). Salmonella Durham was isolated for the first time in New Zealand (case had recently travel overseas).
