Human Salmonella Isolates, 2013 No. 2, February

Summary

The number of isolates (n=116) showed a slight decrease in comparison with February 2012 (n = 120). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type RDNC-May 06 (1.7% in February 2012 and 7.8% in February 2013) and S.  Typhimurium phage type 160 (4.2% in February 2012 and 7.8% in February 2013) were the predominant serotypes. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included S. Virginia. Six human isolates have been confirmed in New Zealand since 1988, 4 of which had recently travelled to South East Asia. The current case had travelled overseas.
