Summary

The number of isolates this month (n=105) showed an increase in comparison with April 2012 (n = 79). Salmonella Infantis (2.5% in April 2012 and 15.2% in April 2013) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included S. Typhimurium phage type 136 (2 human cases confirmed since 1996) and S. Virginia (3 human cases confirmed since 1996).
S. Infantis An increase in S. Infantis has been reported in the Auckland and Northland region. Investigation is underway. No common source identified so far.
