Summary

The number of isolates (n=101) showed a decrease in comparison with February 2013 (n = 116). Salmonella Infantis (6.0% in February 2013, 9.9% in February 2014) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included: S. Enteritidis phage type 6c (2 humans isolates since 1988) and S. Wangata (15 human isolates since 1988). Salmonella Urbana was isolated for the first time from a human in New Zealand; this serotype has been previously confirmed in environmental sample in 2004 and 2005 (https://surv.esr.cri.nz/enteric_reference/nonhuman_salmonella.php).
Salmonella Infantis cluster in the Auckland region Six cases of S. Infantis were confirmed in the Auckland region this month; this compares to 2 cases this time last year.
Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 160 cluster in the Otago region Seven cases of S. Typhimurium phage type 160 were confirmed in the Otago Health District; this compares to 4 cases this time last year.
