Human Salmonella Isolates, 2014 No. 3, March

Summary

The number of isolates (n=78) showed a decrease in comparison with March 2013 (n = 102). Salmonella Infantis (3.9% in March 2013, 14.1% in March 2014) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included: S. Enteritidis phage type 25 (17 humans isolates, all confirmed between 1994-2009) and S. Eastbourne (12 human isolates, all confirmed between 1990-2005).

Five cases of S. Infantis were confirmed in the Auckland region this month; this compares to 3 cases this time last year.
