Human Salmonella Isolates, 2014 No. 6, June

Summary

The number of isolates (n=70) showed an increase in comparison with June 2013 (n = 54). Salmonella Stanley (1.6% in June 2013, 7.1% in June 2014) and S. Typhimurium phage type 56 variant (11.1% in June 2013, 7.1% in June 2014) were the predominant serotypes.

The following clusters were confirmed this month in the Auckland region:

  • Household cluster (3 cases) of S. Enteritidis phage type 26 was confirmed in the Auckland region this month.
  • Three cases of S. Infantis, this compares with one case for the same period last year. All cases were children aged 5 years or less.
  • Three cases of S. Agona, this compares with no case for the same period last year. The cases had recently travelled overseas.

Increase in Salmonella Stanley

  • This month five cases of S. Stanley were confirmed (Auckland DBH (3 cases), Hawke’s Bay and Waikato DHBs (1 case each)). This compares to one case for the same period last year (Auckland DHB).
  • The Hawke’s Bay and Waikato cases had recently travelled overseas; no travel information was provided for the Auckland cases.
