Human Salmonella Isolates, 2014 No. 8, August

Summary
The number of isolates (n=67) confirmed this month showed a decrease in comparison with August 2013 (n = 93). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 56 variant (20.4% in August 2013, 11.9% in August 2014) was the predominant serotype. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included S. Alachua (5 human isolates since 2002 when it was first confirmed in New Zealand), and S. Richmond (5 human isolates since 1999 when it was first confirmed in New Zealand). Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 24 variant was confirmed for the first time in New Zealand (no overseas travel reported).
