Human Salmonella Isolates, 2014 No. 10, October

Summary

The number of isolates (n=91) confirmed this month showed a decrease in comparison with October 2013 (n = 110). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 56 variant (10.9% in October 2013, 13.2% in October 2014) and S. Brandenburg (11.8% in October 2013, 13.2% in October 2014) were the predominant serotypes confirmed this month. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included: S. Adelaide (6 human isolates since 1992 when it was first confirmed in New Zealand), S. Typhimurium phage type 60 (16 human isolates since 1996 when it was first confirmed in New Zealand) and S. Victoria (51 human isolates since 1989, with 78.8% of cases confirmed between 1989 and 2000). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 32 was isolated for the first time from a human case in New Zealand (no overseas travel reported but 2 poultry isolates have been previously confirmed).
