Human Salmonella Isolates, 2015 No. 6, June

Summary

The number of isolates (n=66) confirmed this month showed slight decrease in comparison to the number of isolates confirmed in June 2014 (n=70). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 56 variant (7.1% in June 2014 vs 16.7% in June 2015) was the most common serotype confirmed this month. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month included S. Bardo (7 human isolates since it was first confirmed in New Zealand in 1989) and S. Litchfield (14 human isolates since it was first reported in New Zealand in 1988; 50% of cases reported recent travel overseas). Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 45 was confirmed for the first time in New Zealand, no overseas travel reported.
