Human Salmonella Isolates, 2016 No. 5, May

The number of isolates (n=85) confirmed this month showed a decrease in comparison to the number of isolates confirmed in May 2015 (n=92). Salmonella Stanley (4.4% in May 2015 vs 7.1% in May 2016) and S. Typhimurium phage type 56 variant (9.8% in May 2015 vs 7.1% in May 2016) were the most common serotypes confirmed this month. Uncommon serotypes confirmed this month included S. Enteritidis phage type 22 (5 human cases since it was first confirmed in New Zealand in 1999) and S. Bredeney (10 human cases since it was first confirmed in New Zealand in 1991).
