Human Salmonella isolates, 2017 No.10, October

The number of isolates (n=112) confirmed this month showed an increase in comparison to the number of isolates confirmed in October 2016 (n=93). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 56 variant (6.5% in October 2016 vs 13.4% in October 2017) was the most common serotype confirmed this month. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month were S. Enteritidis phage type 3a (4 human isolates since it was first confirmed in New Zealand in 2011) and S. Typhimurium phage type 2 (9 human isolates since it was first confirmed in New Zealand in 1999). Salmonella Coeln was confirmed for the first time in New Zealand this month; the case had recently travelled to Greece, Croatia and Hungary and Salmonella Lagos was confirmed for the first time in New Zealand this month.
