Human Salmonella isolates, 2017 No.11, November

The number of isolates (n=79) confirmed this month showed a decrease in comparison to the number of isolates confirmed in November 2016 (n=89). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 56 variant (10.1% in November 2016 vs 21.5% in November 2016) was the most common serotype confirmed this month. Uncommon Salmonella serotypes confirmed this month were S. Charity (2 human isolates since it was first confirmed in New Zealand in 1999) S. Enteritidis phage type 3 (7 human isolates since it was first confirmed in New Zealand in 2001) and S. Kisangani (3 human isolates since it was first confirmed in New Zealand in 2009). Salmonella Amoutive was confirmed for the first time in New Zealand this month; the case had recently travelled to China.
