Human Salmonella isolates, 2018 No.1, January

The number of isolates (n=132) confirmed this month showed an increase in comparison to the number of isolates confirmed in January 2017 (n=121). Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 56 variant and Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 101 (9.3% in January 2018 vs 9.1% and 7.4% in January 2017) were the most common serotypes confirmed this month. Uncommon serotypes confirmed this month included Salmonella Brancaster (6 human cases since it was first confirmed in New Zealand in 2006), Salmonella Charity (3 human cases since it was first confirmed in New Zealand in 1999).
