Human Salmonella isolates, 2020 No.05, May

The number of isolates (n=40) confirmed this month showed a decrease in comparison to the number of isolates confirmed in May 2019 (n=84). S. Typhimurium ST19 (27.5% in May 2020) was the most common serotype confirmed this month.
COVID-19 lockdown impacted faecal testing at diagnostic laboratories and therefore reduced the number of enteric isolates received at ESR through March, April and May 2020. This downturn in samples is due to a number of factors including: diagnostic laboratories prioritising resources in the first instance to COVID-19 testing, but was also due to restrictions on travel, gatherings and hospitality prepared food.
