Summary

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 270 non-human isolates in the October – December quarter in 2010 compared with 171 in 2009.
During this quarter bovine isolates increased from 100 in 2009 to 186 in 2010 (10% increase).The increase in bovine isolates was most significant in S. Ruiru (0 in 2009, 19 in 2010), S. Typhimurium phage type 12a (11 in 2009, 32 in 2010), and S. Typhimurium phage type 8 (5 in 2009, 17 in 2010).
S. Brandenburg in this quarter showed a decrease compared to 2009 but the high numbers in 2009 were due to kiwi bird samples.
