Non-Human Salmonella Isolates, 2011 Apr-Jun

Summary

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 305 non-human Salmonella isolates in the second quarter of 2011 compared with 192 in the same period of 2010.

There was a general increase in the number of S. Agona isolates to this time last year mostly due to the number of meat/bone meal isolates.

There was an increase in the number of environmental S. Brandenburg isolates this quarter with 21 in 2011 and none in 2010. Twenty S. Brandenburg were part of a commercial project.

There was a general increase in the number of poultry isolates with 70 confirmed in the second quarter of 2011 compared with 28 in the same period of 2010.
