Non-Human Salmonella Isolates, 2011 Jul-Sep

Summary
The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 579 non-human Salmonella isolates in the third quarter of 2011 compared with 513 in the same period of 2010. In the third quarter there was increase in bovine isolates with 374 in 2011 compared to 265 in 2010. Ovine isolates decreased from 109 in 2010 compared to 48 in 2011. S. Brandenburg isolated from ovine decreased from 92 in 2010 to 39 in 2011.
S. Typhimurium phage type 135 variant has 3 phage typing reactions which are distinct from our DT135. This phage type has also been confirmed in human (3 cases from Taupo Health District) in September this year (Human Salmonella Isolates, 2011 No. 9, September). All cases had had contact with calves.
