Non-Human Salmonella Isolates, 2012 No. 3, March

Summary

As from January 2012, the non-human Salmonella serotypes has been published on a monthly basis, replacing the quarterly reports from previous years.

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 101 non-human Salmonella isolates in March 2012.

Comparing the 1st quarter from 2012 to the same period in 2011, an increase in the following Salmonella was observed: S. Hindmarsh (from 21 in 2011 to 27 in 2012), S. Typhimurium phage type 12a (from 12 in 2011, to 25 in 2012), S. Typhimurium phage type 101 (from 12 in 2011 to 20 in 2012), and S. Typhimurium phage type 160 (from 0 in 2011 to 15 in 2012). Twelve of the 15 isolates of S. Typhimurium phage type 160 were food isolates.

Three S. Saintpaul isolates were from reptiles. During the month of March an increase was observed in human cases of S. Saintpaul (from 5 in March 2011 to 9 in March 2012).
