Friday 19th July 2019

Summary

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 59 non-human Salmonella isolates in December 2012.

During the last quarter i.e. October to December 2012, 195 Salmonella isolates were confirmed in comparison to 343 in 2011.

There was an increase in the number of S. Montevideo isolates (0 in 2011 vs. 11 in 2012) due to an outbreak in the North Island linked to the consumption of contaminated tahini. Salmonella Maastricht and S. Mbandaka have also been isolated from the tahini http://www.surv.esr.cri.nz/enteric_reference/human_salmonella.php?we_objectID=3240 and http://www.surv.esr.cri.nz/enteric_reference/human_salmonella.php?we_objectID=3266 . Salmonella Maastricht was isolated for the first time in New Zealand in November from a human case which had consumed tahini.
