Non-Human Salmonella Isolates, 2013 No. 1, January

Thursday 19th September 2019

Summary

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 69 non-human Salmonella isolates in January 2012 compared with 100 in 2011.

There was a decrease in animal isolates, mainly due to a decrease in bovine isolates from 56 in the January 2012 to 6 in 2013. This resulted in a decrease in the number of S. Typhimurium isolates confirmed with 61 in the January 2012 and 11 in 2013.

There was an increase in S.  Mbandaka isolates due to an outbreak linked to the consumption of contaminated tahini. S. Mbandaka was isolated from the tahini resulting in a product recall (http://www.surv.esr.cri.nz/enteric_reference/human_salmonella.php?we_objectID=3266)
