Non-Human Salmonella Isolates, 2013 No. 7, July

Summary

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 136 non-human Salmonella isolates in July 2013 compared with 67 in July 2012.

There was an increase:

  •    In the number of S. Brandenburg isolates (6 in 2012 versus 33 in 2013) from bovine and environmental source.
  •    In the number of Equine (3 in June 2012 versus 12 in June 2013) and Feline isolates (0 in 2012 versus 17 in 2013) due to an increase in the number of S. Typhimurium phage type 56 variant confirmed this month. An increase was also confirmed in human isolates where 16 isolates of S. Typhimurium phage type 56 variant were confirmed this month in comparison to 6 during the same period last year.


S. Typhimurium phage type 56 variant was previously known as S. Typhimurium phage type RDNC-May 06. Further characterisation by the Salmonella Reference Unit at Colindale (Public Health England) identified this phage type to be a 56 variant.
