Non-Human Salmonella Isolates, 2013 No. 9, September

Summary

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 160 non-human Salmonella isolates in September 2013 compared with 132 September 2012.

There was an increase in the number of food isolates (7 in 2012 versus 25 in 2013) and environmental isolates (2 in 2012 versus 13 in 2013).

An increase in the following serotypes was also confirmed this month:

  • Brandenburg (28 in 2012 versus 38 in 2013)
  • Infantis (1 in 2012 versus 6 in 2013)
  • Typhimurium phage type 9 (2 in 2012 versus 13 in 2013)
  • Typhimurium phage type 56 variant (5 in 2012 versus 18 in 2013)


There was a decrease in the number of bovine isolates (87 in 2012 versus 75 in 2013).

S. Typhimurium phage type 56 variant was previously known (prior to July 2013) as RDNC-May 06. Further characterisation by the Salmonella Reference Unit at Colindale (Public Health England) identified this phage type to be a 56 variant.
