Non-human Salmonella Isolates, 2020 January - June 2020
The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 209 non-human Salmonella isolates in January - June 2020 compared with 271 in January - June 2019. There was a decrease in the number of ovine isolates (35 in 2019 versus 9 in 2020), S. Bovismorbificans isolates (74 in 2019 versus 51 in 2020) and poultry environmental isolates (28 in 2019 versus 17 in 2020). There was an increase in the number of S. Give isolates (2 in 2019 versus 27 in 2020). Salmonella Give was first identified by ESR from bovine samples in March 2019 and is now emerging as a significant type within this species, as well as being seen in a cat and a dog during the time of the current dataset. This serotype was confirmed in meat and bone meal samples in 2014. Human cases to date have been rare and usually have a history of travel to South East Asia particularly Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam.
