Human Salmonella isolates, 2020 No.06, June

The number of isolates (n=33) confirmed this month showed a slight increase in comparison to the number of isolates confirmed in June 2019 (n=72). Salmonella Typhimurium ST19 (18.2% in June 2018) was the most common serotype confirmed this month. Uncommon Salmonella serotype confirmed this month was S. Rubislaw (7 human isolates since it was first confirmed in New Zealand in 1993)

COVID-19 lockdown impacted faecal testing at diagnostic laboratories and therefore reduced the number of enteric isolates received at ESR through March, April, May and June 2020. This downturn in samples is due to a number of factors including: diagnostic laboratories prioritising resources in the first instance to COVID-19 testing, but was also due to restrictions on travel, gatherings and hospitality prepared food.
