IPD Quarterly Report: Apr-Jun 2022

Saturday 3rd December 2022

Summary

There were 166 IPD cases notified April to June 2022 (Q2 2022). This is the highest number of cases reported in Q2 of any year since IPD became notifiable (n=161 cases in Q2 2009).The rate for the combined serotypes 3, 6A, and 19A has reached a record high in the 12 months ending in June 2022, largely explained by the prevalence of 19A.

The number of cases with PCV13 preventable serotypes among children under 5 has continued to steadily increase since 2018. Through Q2 2022, 28 of 29 (96.6%) PCV13-serotype cases in children under 5 years have been 19A. Since 2019, 90% of all PCV13-vaccine preventable cases in children under 5 years have been serotype 19A (88/98). The proportion of PCV13-specific cases that are 19A among all ages has steadily increased since 2017. In 2022 through Q2, 79.4% of cases due to a PCV13 serotype are 19A.
