Summary

There were 246 IPD cases notified July to September 2022 (Q3 2022). This is the highest number of cases reported in Q3 of any year since the first year IPD became notifiable (n=254 cases in Q3 2009).The rate for the combined serotypes 3, 6A, and 19A has reached a record high in the 12 months ending in September 2022, nearly fully explained by the incidence of 19A.

The number of cases with PCV13 preventable serotypes among children under 5 has continued to steadily increase since 2018. Through Q3 2022, 49 of 51 (96.1%) PCV13-serotype cases in children under 5 years have been 19A. Since 2019, 91% of all PCV13-vaccine preventable cases in children under 5 years have been serotype 19A (109/120). The proportion of PCV13-specific cases that are 19A among all ages has steadily increased since 2017. In 2022 through Q3, 77.2% of cases due to a PCV13 serotype are 19A.
