Summary of notifiable and other disease surveillance trends in 2012

In 2012, 20 253 cases of notifiable disease were notified through EpiSurv, the national notifiable disease database. This was an increase from 2011 and was the highest annual number of notifications since the peak in 2006.

Between 2011 and 2012, there was a statistically significant increase in the notification rate of acute gastroenteritis, campylobacteriosis, cryptosporidiosis, dengue fever, hepatitis A, leptospirosis, pertussis and shigellosis. Conversely, there was a significant decrease in the notification rate for giardiasis, invasive pneumococcal disease, measles, meningococcal disease and mumps.

In 2012, there were 716 outbreaks reported, involving 10 491 cases. This represented an increase in the number of outbreaks and associated cases compared with 2011 and 2010 figures. The most common pathogen implicated was norovirus, followed by Giardia spp. More than 80% of outbreaks reported in 2012 had person-to-person recorded as a mode of transmission. The most common exposure settings recorded were long-term care facilities and private homes.

The average weekly influenza consultation rate was 50.2 per 100 000 patient population in 2012, an increase from the 2011 rate. In 2012, the peak weekly consultation rate of 154.1 per 100 000 occurred in early August and was higher than the peaks in 2011 and 2010.

In 2012, Chlamydia trachomatis infection was again the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted infection in New Zealand, with a population rate of more than four times that of the most commonly reported notifiable disease, campylobacteriosis.
