Summary of notifiable and other disease surveillance trends in 2013

In 2013, 17 711 cases of notifiable disease were notified through EpiSurv, the national notifiable disease database, compared with 19 932 in 2012.

Between 2012 and 2013, there was a statistically significant increase in the notification rate of cryptosporidiosis, dengue fever, and verotoxin- or shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC/STEC) infection. Conversely, there was a significant decrease in the notification rate for campylobacteriosis, acute gastroenteritis, leptospirosis, measles and pertussis.

In 2013, there were 652 outbreaks reported involving 7137 cases, compared with 719 outbreaks involving 10 500 cases in 2012. The most common pathogen implicated was norovirus, followed by Cryptosporidium spp and Giardia spp. More than 90% of outbreaks reported in 2013 were associated with person-to-person transmission. The most common exposure settings recorded were private homes and long-term care facilities.

The average weekly influenza consultation rate was 22.6 per 100 000 patient population in 2013, a decrease from the 2012 rate of 50.2 per 100 000. In 2013, the peak weekly consultation rate of 47.3 per 100 000 occurred in mid-September and was much lower than the 2012 peak.

In 2013, Chlamydia trachomatis infection was again the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted infection in New Zealand, with a population rate of more than four times that of the most commonly reported notifiable disease, campylobacteriosis.
