Notifiable diseases in NZ: Annual Report 2014
A total of 15,045 notifiable disease cases were reported in 2014, compared with 17,693 in 2013. Notifications for most enteric diseases decreased from 2013 to 2014, except for yersiniosis and acute gastroenteritis. Yersiniosis experienced a 41% increase (from 484 cases in 2013 to 682 in 2014), largely due to an outbreak involving 220 cases. Acute gastroenteritis notifications increased by 35% from 558 cases in 2013 to 755 cases in 2014. Notified cases of cryptosporidiosis showed a significant decrease (57%), from 1348 in 2013 to 584 in 2014. Notified cases of three vaccine-preventable diseases decreased: meningococcal disease, mumps and pertussis; while cases of invasive pneumococcal disease remained the same. However, there was a significant increase in notified cases of measles from 8 cases in 2013 to 280 cases in 2014. Notified cases of several arboviral diseases (Chikungunya, dengue and Zika fevers) showed a significant increase from 2013 to 2014. All of the cases were in people who had travelled overseas during the incubation period. Note: Click on the document links below to open. These documents are in PDF format.
