Key Notifiable Disease Trends

  • Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD): one case of sporadic CJD,   confirmed by clinical specimen was notified in December 2006. The case was a female aged 40-49 years from Waitemata DHB. No cases of variant CJD, the form linked with bovine spongiform encephalopathy, have ever been identified in New Zealand.
  • Gastroenteritis: 57 cases of gastroenteritis were notified in December 2006 compared to 18 notified cases in the same month of the previous year. Seven cases were hospitalised. The highest numbers of cases were reported from Canterbury (23) and MidCentral (13) DHBs. Almost half (28) of the notified cases were identified as being part of an outbreak.
  • Leprosy:  one probable case of leprosy was notified in December 2006 bringing the year to date total to four. The case was a female aged 50-59 years from Waitemata DHB, who travelled to the Philippines during the incubation period and had contact with a person with leprosy.
  • Meningococcal disease: based on the earliest date available , 12 cases of meningococcal disease were notified during December 2006, of which seven (58.3%) were laboratory-confirmed.  In comparison, 12 cases were notified the previous month, November 2006, and 10 cases were notified during the same month last year, December 2005. For the 12 month period ending 31 December 2006, Waikato DHB recorded the highest incidence rate of 8.5 per 100 000 population (27 cases). The highest age-specific incidence rate was in infants aged less than one year (62.2 per 100 000 population, 34 cases), followed by those in the 1-4 years age group (13.0 per 100 000 population, 28 cases), and those in the 15-19 years age group (10.9 per 100 000 population, 29 cases).
  • Mumps: eight cases of mumps were notified in December 2006 compared to two notified cases in the same month of the previous year. The cases were reported from Waitemata (2), Hutt (2), Counties Manukau (1), Lakes (1), MidCentral (1), and Canterbury (1) DHBs. The cases were in the following age groups: 10-14 years (3), 20-29 years (2), 1-4 years (1), 30-39 years (1) and 70+ years (1). Three cases were immunised (one case received two doses, one case received one dose, and the third case’s number of doses is unknown).
  • Pertussis: 25 pertussis cases were notified in December 2006, of whom six (24.0%) were laboratory-confirmed. The number of pertussis notifications per month has decreased from the peak in November 2004 when 613 cases were notified (Figure 1). No cases were reported as being hospitalised. Canterbury DHB had the highest number of cases (10). For the 12 month period ending 31 December 2006, Waikato DHB had the highest incidence rate of 87.2 per 100 000 population (277 cases), compared to the national rate of 29.9 per 100 000 population. Over this period the incidence rate by age group was highest amongst infants aged less than one year (71.4 per 100 000 population). This was followed by those in the 50-59 years age group (39.7 per 100 000) and the 60-69 years age group (38.6 per 100 000 population).
  • Typhoid fever: nine cases of typhoid fever were notified in December 2006 compared to three notified cases in the same month of the previous year (Figure 2). The cases were from Counties Manukau (8) and Waitemata (1) DHBs. Four cases were hospitalised. The species involved was identified for seven of the nine cases as: Salmonella Typhi phage type E1a (6) and S. Typhi E7 variant (1). Two cases had been to Samoa during the incubation period.
  • Yersiniosis: 41 yersiniosis cases were notified in December 2006 compared to 22 cases notified in the same month of the previous year.  Three cases were reported as being hospitalised. Capital and Coast DHB had the highest number of cases (9), followed by Canterbury (7) DHB. Overseas travel information was recorded for 12/41 (29.3%) cases, of which one had been overseas (Wales).
